Christian Saints in Art with Kathleen Keys

Long before Christians knew how to read a book, they could identify one saint from another by “reading” the work of art, whether the art was sculpture or stained glass or an illuminated manuscript. The faithful knew the stories of each individual saint and their attributes or symbols. The details in the artwork revealed the identity of the saint. The faithful knew it was Saint Barbara and not Saint Ursula because they could “read” the artwork. This class will cover many of your favorite Christian saints from A to Z, their stories and symbols and how to identify each one in famous works of art. Saint Francis of Assisi and Saint Clare will be especially featured as they are such beloved saints and the details of their lives made many exceptional works of art. The source of the art will be altarpieces, frescoes, illuminated manuscripts, stained glass, sculptures, tapestries, as well as architecture. Join us for beautiful and uplifting art!  There will be two meeting dates: September 17 and 24.  Donations are welcome, but there is no charge for these sessions.
