Laudato Si’ Committee: Working Together to Protect the Earth

In November 2018, the Conventual Franciscan Friars of the Province of Our Lady of Consolation launched the Franciscan Earth Care Initiative, celebrating the Franciscan tradition of honoring nature, the environment, and our planet. Much has happened within our Province since that time!  Holy Cross Retreat Center responded to this initiative by forming the Laudato Si’ Committee, and ecumenical group that promotes environmental stewardship and sustainability into our everyday lives in southern New Mexico.

Holy Cross Retreat Center, along with the Province, through the Franciscan Earth Care Initiative, has committed to the following activities and more:

• Solar installations at HCRC.
• Building renovations using recycled and sustainable materials and resources.
• Educating retreatants and members of our local community about caring for the environment and appreciating the beauty of our desert climate and natural mountain range.
• Providing educational programs and speakers incorporating nature and spirituality to bring greater awareness of the importance of respecting and protecting the environment.
• Ways in which the friars and the community can work together to protect the earth.

Un comité ecuménico se reúne periódicamente durante el año para promover la acción y la concienciación dentro de una variedad de iglesias y de la ciudad.

El lunes 17 de octubre de 2022 se llevó a cabo una proyección pública de la película “La Carta, un mensaje para nuestra Tierra” con el Papa Francisco en el Centro de Retiros de la Santa Cruz. La película de una hora y media es una promoción adicional de la encíclica “Laudato ¡Sí!” nos llama a cuidar de toda la creación, humana y de la naturaleza. El Papa Francisco publicó una encíclica llamada ¡Laudato, Si!, el 24 de mayo de 2015. La encíclica tiene como subtítulo “Sobre el cuidado de nuestra casa común”. En él, el Papa critica el consumismo y el desarrollo irresponsable, lamenta la degradación ambiental y el calentamiento global, y llama a todas las personas del mundo a tomar "acción global rápida y unificada".

Junto con muchas otras entidades, Holy Cross Retreat Center ha formado un Laudato, Si! comité para promover la educación, la conversión ecológica y la acción sobre los objetivos de la encíclica. El comité planeó y organizó una conmemoración del Día de la Tierra el 22 de abril de 2022 con diez presentadores sobre varios temas, el comienzo de un mural al aire libre y la plantación de un árbol rojo resistente a la sequía en medio de nuestro laberinto con la ayuda de Jeff Anderson de la Sociedad de Extensión de NMSU.

The committee has continued meeting monthly to develop a better understanding of how we can learn and prepare our specific goals.  The Mural entitled “St. Francis of the Southwest” and completed by Linda Hagen with help from others, depicts St. Francis of Assisi surrounded by 36 different creatures in a desert environment.  It relates how we can care for all around us and live in peace.  The 10 feet by 20 feet mural was dedicated and blessed on August 28, 2022.
